First Training Provider Worldwide to Calculate Carbon Footprint
Introduction
To further enhance Megamas’ unique and high quality services in the region, Megamas has undertaken the following study. This study helps Megamas to better understand its environmental impacts throughout its core and related business.
It is felt that the knowledge of this data, and the steps required to undertake and manage its ongoing Carbon Footprint provide synergy with the quality of consultancy and training courses offered and highlight Megamas’ ongoing commitment and response to climate change.
Megamas have clear ambitions to develop sustainable initiatives both internally amongst their staff and participants but equally have a long term strategy to develop the role of sustainable thinking externally within the country and region.
The results
Megamas’ Carbon Footprint is demonstrated in the chart below. The greatest proportion of CO2 is emitted by our staff undertaking their daily commute. The greatest core-business related emissions stem from Kerosene Combustion as a result of our training activities.
A total of 232.48 Tonnes of CO2 are released into the atmosphere from Megamas’ business operations each year.
The figure is greatly enlarged by the incorporation of ‘Staff Travel’ to and from work (90 tonnes pa). In many cases, ‘Staff Travel’ is excluded from company’s Carbon Reporting on the basis that it is their employee’s own personal choice, however Megamas have included this figure as it is felt that this is an area that can be influenced on a corporate level.
How did we calculate our footprint?
To calculate our footprint we used the following data, and entered it into a sophisticated computer model:
-
Staff commuting
-
Company car travel
-
Flights taken on business purpose
-
Energy usage - Water, Electricity
-
Fire Extinguisher Discharges
-
Fuel Usage - Kerosene, Diesel
Megamas would like to thank Sharina and Hajah Laila for their task of looking through our company records to provide the baseline data for the study. They completed the work quickly and accurately.
Megamas together with an Environmental Specialist from the UK performed the final calculations.
Next Steps:
Now that we know our carbon footprint we can start to reduce it. The results of the study will be shared at our staff meeting next week so that each employee is aware of this project. Each employee will be able to make suggestions about how we can reduce our carbon footprint.
We will implement our improvements and play our part in limiting the damage done to the earth by CO2 emissions.
