A carbon footprint is "the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused directly and indirectly by an organisation". It is often expressed in terms of the amount of carbon dioxide, or its equivalent of other GHGs, emitted.
Megamas can undertake a carbon foot-printing service in your organisation to approved standards namely the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO 14064. You will be able to quantify your emissions in terms of their potential to contribute to Global Warming (GWP) the units of which are CO2e. This is the internationally recognised unit for measurement of Carbon emissions.
Measuring a full Carbon Footprint is an enormous task, and therefore most companies monitor within the ‘standard boundary of measurement’ detailed in the figure below. There are instances where the inclusion of a wider variety of Scope 3 emissions may be called for which we have the expertise to undertake.
We propose to offer several levels of
support in this matter. Each tier is
designed to recognise different levels of interest and requirement in the
subject.

Tier 1 Quantification– Will enable the client to be assured of the
breakdown and quantity of their emissions.
This will include the total level of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emitted
within the Standard Boundary of measurement, total level of CO2 and a detailed understanding of the main source of their GHG
emissions. We will utilise the
Greenhouse Gas Protocol to quantify emissions.
Wherever practical we will draw attention to quick-wins in terms of cost
reductions that will have an impact on GHG reduction, although this will not be
the main focus of the study.
Client Outputs:
·
Confidence in reporting Carbon
Footprint internally and externally
·
An understanding of the main
areas of emissions
·
Generic pointers for emission
reduction
·
A report of findings
Study Requirements:
·
Detailed Data Provision – a
list will be provided
·
Staff time and resource
·
1 Site visit
·
A client project sponsor/main
contact
Tier 2 Quantification and Scoping – Tier 2 builds upon the work
undertaken in Tier 1 to understand the determining factors for developing a
Carbon Reduction and Management Strategy.
This step hence forms the precursor to Tier 3 but enables a rationalised
programme to take forward
The Tier 2 scoping study consists of a high
degree of interaction with senior staff to understand a detailed list of corporate
priorities, current actions, and proposed growth. This enables a dynamic target to be set
in-terms of emission profiles. The interaction will inform a top-level
strategy for reduction and will consider best practice processes to ameliorate
current and future Greenhouse Gas emissions.
Client Outputs:
·
A projection of current and
future emissions
·
An understanding of
organisational priorities and ‘drivers’ for emission reduction
·
A list of opportunity areas for
emission reduction these will be prioritised in terms of cost and
effectiveness. (In many cases opportunities are cost neutral, cost negative or
pay-back with 1-3 years)
·
A projection of the impact of
considering our list of opportunity areas against a ‘business as usual’
approach.
·
A report of findings and a
detailed presentation outlining possible actions.
Study Requirements:
·
Tier 1 study requirements
·
Client Senior management buy-in
and time
·
2 or more site visits with
specialist client staff presence
·
Access to information regarding
business growth, projections and strategy (we are prepared to sign
confidentiality agreements)
(Note: The omission of an overarching
scoping study will result in an unclear strategy which may be ineffectual,
therefore we insist on the completion of this tier prior to the undertaking of
tier 3.)
Tier 3 Quantification, Scoping and Strategy - Tier 3 acts upon the
strategy and opportunity list developed as part of Tier 2. Tier 3 is a longer and more strategic review
that enables management decisions to be taken upon a defined set of costed
actions. This involves the breaking down
of the main opportunity areas to determine an implementation plan and logical,
timed, defined steps that can be followed to act.
Tier 3 is a bespoke study that directly
reflects the client’s requirements. The
ouput is therefore not rigid but may include:
·
Action prioritisation and strategy,
·
Adherence to legislation and
future-proofing impending legislation,
·
Consideration of the marketing
of initiatives,
·
Methods for ongoing monitoring
and measurement,
·
Determining and ensuring success
of measures,
·
Informed investment decisions,
·
Contributions towards Corporate
Social Responsibility reporting,
·
To consider the influence the
company can have on their wider Scope 3 emissions.
