NORM Compliance and Training
  • Naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) is found in our bodies and in the environment, In its natural state, NORM is present in very low concentrations and does not pose a health or environmental concern. However, NORM may pose a potential health and environmental hazard when it is concentrated during some industrial processes, including oil and gas, phosphate fertilizer manufacture, water treatment, and metal recycling and processing.
  • When NORM is encountered, you must assess the potential impact and implement an appropriate NORM management program.
  • At present, NORM is not regulated by either level of government and does not come under the jurisdiction of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Recently the Canadian NORM Working Group produced a draft document entitled "Canadian Guidelines for the Management of NORM” in an effort to give some guidance to industry in the safe handling of NORM.In this workshop, we will review the latest NORM guidelines and discuss how to implement the guidelines and demonstrate due diligence at your facility. You will learn about:
      • The origin and nature of NORM
      • Industrial sources of NORM
      • Units used to measure and quantify NORM
      • Health risks and hazards associated with NORM
      • NORM guidelines, how to identify / classify NORM
      • NORM detection and surveys
