Hazardous Area Basics


Aims
This course aims to give participants an understanding of the methods used to make electrical equipment suitable for use in hazardous areas, in order that they are better prepared to inspect and maintain electrical equipment in these areas.

  • Discuss gas properties, ignition and flame propagation
  • Develop Gas Grouping and "T" Rating concepts
  • Introduce hazardous area classification
  • Describe methods used to make electrical equipment suitable for use in hazardous areas.
  • Provide examples of hazardous area certified equipment.
  • Explain the certification markings on equipment intended for use in hazardous areas
  • Introduce ingress protection rating systems
  • Give an overview of hazardous area related standards
  • Compare North American and European standards
  • Show examples of non-compliance with standards.
  • Discuss maintenance issues relevant to hazardous area certified equipment.
