Megamas conducted a new course at their Kiulap office recently for the Department of Civil Aviation, Yuszaima Jaya Enterprise, and private customers on how to develop a positive safety culture within the organisation.

The course was conducted by Mohd Roger Ainsworth, who has delivered similar courses in Singapore and India.

The building of a Just Culture is one of the first major steps in creating a Safety Culture. Health and Safety culture depends upon the employer and employees working together with a positive attitude. Employers must set a good example to ensure that health and safety is an integral part of Corporate Policy.

Errors versus reckless violations were discussed, and the need to understand human factors, and the balance between recognition and reward, and disciplinary measures.

The course offers many practical examples of human error and violations. The course highlights that organisations need to invest heavily in the quality, motivation, and experience of their front-line worksite supervisors. Mohd Roger also stresses the importance of leadership and commitment. “Leaders need to be mindful of the possibility of major accidents”.

In conclusion, Mohd Roger pointed out that safety culture has been one of a number of ideas seen as offering organisations a way to achieve higher standards of safety.
