Megamas Training Company Sdn Bhd, based in Kg Mumong in Kuala Belait has begun the training for the first batch of eight Defensive Driving Instructors, a press release stated.

In December 2010, Megamas signed a contract with the Brunei Land Transport Department to deliver driving courses for the Brunei Driving School Instructors.

The impetus behind this was that the Ministry of Communications, especially the Department of Land Transport was concerned about the rising number of accidents on Brunei roads and wanted to improve the requirements for becoming a driving instructor.

Yesterday, at Megamas, the first batch of Driving School Instructors began to undertake the five-day course.

Among many important safety features, this course includes major road safety factors, safe vehicle, road traffic regulation and signs, basic first aid for drivers, defensive driving techniques, emergency braking speed awareness, system of vehicle control and driver attitude.

There are three ‘on road’ assessments, beginning with an initial assessment, then, a coaching session, and a final assessment.

The course also includes a one-day Train the Trainer to improve the Defensive Driving Instructor’s presentation skills.

To ensure competency and achieve the necessary knowledge and skills to become a qualified Defensive Driving Instructor, the delegates also have to sit for a written assessment.
