Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering College (JBEC), will continue to send students for maritime trainings under Megamas with the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday. Signing on behalf of the college was its principal Hj Mohd Sharifuddin Hj Mohd Salleh, while Megas was represented by its Managing Director Hjh Khadijah Hj Mohamed.

The director for technical education at the Ministry of Education Dennis Ho Mun Tai said that the collaboration between the two institutes thus far has “indeed been exemplary”, and that the signing of the MoU marks a milestone in cooperative efforts in the training of maritime personal.

He said that the International Maritime Organisation, (IMO) had revised the education and training of maritime personnel in 1995 (STCW95).

He said that with the conditions imposed by the IMO, the decision was made by the government that Brunei should strive to become self-reliant in the provision of Maritime Training.

He said that the signing of the MoU and the continued cooperation between the two institutions were in line with the Ministry of Education’s stategic initiatives.

In his remarks, Megasmas General Manager Roger Ainsworth said: “Together with JBEC, we have helped in some way to put Bruneians in the ships and to help reduce unemployment and social issues.”

In an interview, Ashraf Azwar, the head of the Marine Department at JBCE told The Brunei Times that this particular MoU was first signed five years ago.

Under the agreement, students would undergo the STCW95 Post Sea Course, which was necessary to be completed for maritime workers to further their careers.
