Megamas Training Company Sdn Bhd based in Mumong, Kuala Belait, has today 14th March 2012 achieved “22 Years Loss Time injury (LTI) Free” outstanding safety performance.
This means that in 22 years operation and over 100,000 participants trained at Megamas, nobody has been seriously injured.
Megamas, the first safety training establishment in Brunei Darussalam, currently conducts over 120 courses mainly to international standards including HSE, Survival, Fire Fighting, Emergency Response, Materials Handling, and Defensive Driving.
According to Mohd Roger Ainsworth, Megamas General Manager, “when we work together, nothing is impossible, when it comes to safety, we will never rest. A good safety performance results in good business performance. Megamas believes that no one should be seriously injured by their work and we all have a chance now to make a significant difference and keep people safer. Megamas has worked hard to develop a safety culture within the organisation in which everybody is accountable for their own behaviour and responsible for their own safety and the safety of others around them. We have this feeling of “chronic unease”, and so, instead of telling ourselves how good we are, we are always asking what is it that we are missing”.
Mohd Roger referred to the contribution which can be made by SME’s having the potential to lead the way in the diversification of the industrial and commercial base of the country, and said that Megamas was proud to have recently received SME awards in two categories at the ” Brunei National SME 2012 Award Ceremony”, held at the ICC in the presence of HRH The Crown Prince. In this respect, Mohd Roger is thankful to the major efforts made by the BEDB and the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.
Mohd Roger also highlighted that “Megamas has been a leading SME in Brunei over the last 22 years devoted to the policy of Bruneisation, whereby the company employs over 80% of local Bruneian staff, many of whom, have remained loyal to the company for well over 10 years, adding that without good people, businesses cannot flourish”.
On the subject of safety in general, Mohd Roger commented that “BSP’s good reputation in the energy sector for oil/gas production has to be linked to its safety performance. In recent years, BSP has become one of the best safety performers in all major Shell EP locations, and Megamas delivering 90% of all BSP’s HSE training has played its role together with other local contractors to BSP’s improved HSE performance during these years. The adoption of international standards for training, e.g. OPITO has also been a key ingredient to ensure safety training has been conducted to the highest standards”.
“We have also been very pleased to work on many Government and BSP initiatives over the years connected with the safety theme” added Mohd Roger, “including Road Shows, Exhibitions, Safety Forums etc, and, of course, particularly proud to have been one of the original members of the Brunei Tell-A-Friend (BTAF) from 2005, which has significantly helped to improve driving behaviours on Brunei roads. Also, it is worth noting that over the last 10 years, Megamas has the outstanding safety record of being 100% “green” for all BSP and Contractor HSE Safe Visits”.
In 2011, Megamas received the Special Award “Green ICT Award” during the 7th Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA).
In addition, Megamas has received international acclaim from the UK Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) at the Awards for Innovation and Excellence held in Birmingham, the British Safety Council with an international safety award for 7 consecutive years from 2004, and from the UK Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (OPITO) for major contribution to offshore training in a safe environment for the oil/gas industry in Abu Dhabi.
“All of our achievements “according to Mohd Roger, are due to the Brunei Government, Brunei Shell Joint Venture companies, TOTAL, and all their contractors, and all the participants who have attended training courses at Megamas. Also, Mohd Roger, paid tribute to the leadership of Megamas Managing Director, Hjh Khadijah Mohamed, who has invested the principles of honesty and integrity throughout the organisation for which Megamas is highly regarded, and invested the profits to develop the facilities and train and develop the local Bruneian staff for which she was rewarded in 2010 by being named by APEC as “Brunei Woman Entrepreneur of the Year”.
