The Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (OPITO) recently revealed at its Annual Conference held at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Abu Dhabi on 3rd November that Megamas Training Company Sdn Bhd in Brunei Darussalam was the winner of the 2015 OPITO Approved Training Providers’ Award.

Now in its sixth year, this global annual event was supported by headline sponsor Shell.The event brought in around 500 senior figures from industry,governments, regulators and training providers from around the globe explored how industry maintains competency and continues to keep
its people safe. OPITO Group Chief Executive Officer, David Doig, said “We have been thoroughly impressed with this year’s entries – the most we have ever received. It’s great to witness an increasing number of organisations looking to continually improve their safety training and develop competency”.

Entries were judged on how the training providers have effectively adopted OPITO standards, the number of staff trained, geographical location and examples of how the standards have shown a tangible improvement in safety and competence in the workplace.

There are 60 + training providers in over 45 countries worldwide delivering OPITO courses, in S-E Asia, Asia, India, Middle East, Europe/UK, Africa, America, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

Distinguished keynote speakers included Kevin Myers, Deputy Chief Executive HSE, Paul Mahoney, Motivational and Behavioural Safety Speaker, and Tony Paul, Vice-President, Safety, for Royal Dutch Shell.

The winner for the 2015 OPITO Approved Training Providers’ Award went to Megamas Training Company Sdn Bhd, in Brunei Darussalam, for the best staff development programme and demonstrating innovation in learning and development.

The award was presented to Mohd Roger Ainsworth (Megamas Training Company General Manager) by Gordon Ballard, Chairman of OPITO International and Chairman Schlumberger UK.

In accepting the award, Mohd Roger Ainsworth paid tribute to all the Megamas staff, saying “Great success can only come from great support. We are one team,staff and management working together. It has been a long hard road, with many challenges along the way in the last 20 + years, it’s not been easy, but with the quality, motivation and passion of all the staff, many of whom, have remained loyal to the company for 15 + years, we have created a culture to work safely and continuously try to improve in order to reach our goals. We have always emphasized growth and development, and as such,we are always looking for ways and means to become better, both in the services we deliver as well as the facilities we provide. The company also ensures its Mission Statement becomes re-enforced in its corporate beliefs by holding daily Tool Box Talks with the operational staff and regular weekly,quarterly and yearly meetings which enables staff participation. Out-of-work activities are also carried out so that staff get the chance to bond. The belief that a company’s strengths are in its people has led Megamas to ensure
that a “family” culture runs strongly through all levels of the
organization”.

Mohd Roger Ainsworth also added that “2015 has been an
outstanding year for the organisation in which we have celebrated “25 Years LTI Free” safety performance, international recognition from NEBOSH UK for our outstanding contribution to health and safety and in 2000 became the first training provider in the world to deliver the OPITO Tropical BOSIET (TBOSIET) course, which
has since been delivered in over 20 countries worldwide.
This year, we have also seen our local Bruneian instructors
delivering different courses to international standards throughout the region in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and China.

It is a great honour for Megamas Training Company and for Brunei Darussalam to have become the Number One OPITO Training Provider in the World”.
