The awards for Innovation and Excellence organized by the UK Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) are awarded once per year and this year were held in the International Communication Center (ICC) In Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

The IChemE awards are widely considered to be the most coveted in the process industries.  Global in reach and covering every aspect of chemical, process and biochemical engineering.

The award ceremony was opened by Mr. David Brown, Chief executive of IChemE, welcoming 430 guests and thanking them for the high quality of submissions the IChemE received.  He mentioned that entries were received from 20 countries worldwide, from Europe, Malaysia, Australia, Brunei and Singapore.

Innovation and Excellence submissions were reviewed under 11 categories and Megamas was nominated on the shortlist for the Health & Safety category.

Megamas was the only company from S-E Asia to have reached the shortlist and were announced as “A Carbon Calculator in Brunei – by Megamas Training Company”.

Mr. David Brown told the audience that those on the shortlist truly represent “the best of the best”.  He made a point that not all 2011 submissions came up to the high standard and congratulated all who managed to have their submissions as part of the short listed nominations.  The shortlist for HSE included 2 top UK Universities, University College London, and Birmingham University.  The others on the list included Sellafield (UK), the Bayer Corporation (Germany) and Megamas Training Company Sdn Bhd (Brunei Darussalam).

Mr and Mrs Gijs vanKalles represented Megamas at the Event.  Mr Gijs vanKalles (worked for Shell for over 30 years as a Civil Engineer, including 7 years in BSP).

Megamas’ submission provided information about their development of a Carbon Foot Print calculator that allows one to determine their individual or Companys’ carbon foot print and thus measuring the effect a business has on the Environment.

Megamas undertook a carbon foot printing study in 2007 and this helped the Company to better understand their environmental impacts throughout the core and related business.  Since 2007, Megamas have measured their carbon footprint every year to identify areas of improvement and are the first training company worldwide to undertake such a comprehensive carbon footprint study.  Megamas has provided many free teaching resources available for school teachers to use when teaching their students about carbon footprinting and climate change.

Megamas have developed a website which enables members of the public to easily calculate their carbon footprint.  By entering some basic information from utility bills anybody can easily calculate their carbon footprint.

The site also provides readymade and free-of-charge teaching materials to educate children about climate change and carbon footprinting.
