PETRONAS Carigali Brunei Ltd (PCBL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petronas, hosted a road safety awareness talk yesterday, with the collaboration of Megamas Training Co Sdn Bhd.

The talk – at Chung Hwa Middle School Bandar Seri Begawan (CHMS BSB) – formed part of PCBL’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Day and Petronas ‘Safe Drive, Save Lives’ road safety campaign.

PCBL Country Head Mohamad Othman in his remarks said, “Road safety is a shared responsibility and it is vital for everyone to be responsible on the road. The event aims to enhance awareness on the importance of road safety among Petronas staff and the public. It is also meant to support the Ministry of Communications’ road safety initiative to reduce accidents in Brunei Darussalam.”

Students and staff of CHMS BSB attended the talk which highlighted the importance of using seatbelts, the danger of using mobile phones while driving and the use of pedestrian crossings.

In her closing remarks, CHMS BSB Principal Kho Guik Lan said, “According to the Global Status Report on Road Safety, road accidents will become the fifth leading cause of deaths by 2030. We should consider this an alarming reminder to take action, before the problem gets worse.

“Most road accidents are caused by carelessness and can be prevented. The only way to curb rising death rates caused by road accidents is to strictly follow road safety regulations.”

In the afternoon, a similar talk was held for Petronas employees at their main office in the Dar Takaful IBB Utama building.
